Family Service Honors David G. Strom
Kicks off Public Phase of Endowment Campaign

Nearly three hundred people filled the Oak Park Country Club as Family Service & Mental Health Center of Oak Park & River Forest honored David G. Strom, Attorney and outstanding community volunteer, as the 2007 Rita Johnson Humanitarian Awardee on May 4 at its’ annual spring benefit, Sing a Song of Hope for Mental Wellness. The event was a tremendous success, raising more than $68,000 for Family Service’s programs.

Strom has been a dedicated volunteer at the agency since 1989. He served as President and Vice President of the Board of Directors and was very instrumental in the agency’s move from rented space to their own facility, the Ray Kroc Center, at 120 S. Marion St., Oak Park.  Mr. Strom is an active community volunteer and has set an outstanding example of community leadership.

Event committee co-chairs, Oak Park residents Ingrid Pearson and Thomas Poulos, thanked those in attendance.  “David is a model of community volunteerism and his contribution to Family Service is priceless, said Tom Poulos.

Oak Park resident Brenda Grusecki announces the Public Phase of the Family Service Endowment Campaign that has generated $950,000 of a $1.2 million goal.Oak Park and River Forest residents Brenda Grusecki and Janice Pyrce announced the kick-off of the agency’s $1.2 million dollar Endowment Campaign at this special occasion. “The theme of this campaign is Healthy Minds, Healthy Communities.  Increasing our modest endowment is the smartest way for us to expand our capacity and build our resources to continue providing services to local youth and seniors,” stated Dan Kill, President/CEO.

A highlight of the evening was the live auction of in-home musical performances. Some of the musical artists who donated their services included David Blamires, formerly of the Pat Metheny Group, Jack Crowe of the Village Theater, and internationally known opera singer, Kimberly McCord.

The Rita Johnson Humanitarian Award was established in 1988 to keep alive the memory of past board member Rita Johnson, an extremely principled woman who displayed strength and dignity throughout her life and worked quietly to move Family Service forward to meet the changing needs of the community. Among her many community contributions, Rita served on the board of Directors of Family Service from 1967 to 1982. Past recipients of the award include, Former. Sen. Philip Rock and Sheila Rock, Bill Kurtis, Margaret Houck, Dwight Follett Family, Anne Julian, Joseph Scully, Ralph and Bonnie Mandell, the McClure Family, Fran and Moe Sullivan, the Rev. F. Dean Lueking, Carolyn Poplett and the President/CEO of Family Service Daniel J. Kill.
