Award Winning Documentary “Stevie” Screened at Lake Theater Winner of numerous film festivals, including the Cinematography Award at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, “Stevie”, was the focus of a free public screening at Oak Park’s Lake Theater on Saturday, March 15. The film was one of the most acclaimed documentaries of 2003, nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and short-listed for the Academy Award. “This is the best film ever!” exclaimed one of the many attendees who spent their Saturday morning viewing the much acclaimed documentary. “I think it was a profoundly moving and heartwarming experience,” remarked another guest. Following the film, the audience had the opportunity to ask director Steve James and his wife Judy Roth, a social worker who also appeared in the film, questions pertaining to the filmmaking process and mental health related issues. The film “Stevie” is an example of superb filmmaking and helps to raise awareness in the community of mental health related issues and the local organizations that are available to assist those in need. Materials from local social service organizations were distributed to guests as they exited the theater. This screening was brought to the community by Family Service & Mental Health Center of Oak Park & River Forest, NAMI Metro Suburban (National Alliance on Mental Illness) , and Pillars.
